IUI, which stands for intrauterine insemination, is a procedure where a concentrated amount of washed sperm is placed directly into the uterus using a specialized catheter. This is done during the ovulation period to enhance the chances of sperm reaching the egg and increasing the likelihood of successful fertilization. The primary objective of IUI is to optimize the number of sperm that can potentially fertilize the egg, thus maximizing the chances of conception.

Understanding IUI: A Brief Overview

Ovulation induction is a process that can be carried out in either a natural or stimulated cycle when undergoing IUI. During ovulation induction, the ovaries are stimulated to produce one or more eggs. This may involve taking tablets alone or a combination of tablets and HMG injections to enhance the growth of oocytes (eggs).

FOLLICULAR MONITORING

It is a crucial step after initiating ovulation induction medication. It involves closely monitoring the response of the ovaries and measuring the growth of follicles. The type and dosage of medication are tailored to each individual to achieve optimal ovulation while minimizing any potential side effects. Typically, folliculometry is performed using transvaginal ultrasound scanning two to three times or more during the treatment cycle. When the leading follicle reaches a diameter of more than 17mm and the endometrium is well developed, an HCG injection is administered to trigger the maturation of the oocyte and stimulate ovulation. Insemination is then performed when ovulation is imminent or shortly after.

INSEMINATION

The procedure for insemination is straightforward, quick, and painless. It begins by inserting a speculum into the vagina to provide a clear view of the cervix. The cervix is gently cleansed using a culture medium. Next, the prepared sperm is carefully introduced into the uterine cavity using a fine plastic catheter. Following the insemination, it is recommended that the patient takes a brief period of rest to ensure optimal conditions. The entire process is designed to be minimally invasive and comfortable for the patient.

PREGNANCY TEST

Implantation typically occurs between 6 to 12 days after ovulation. As a result, it is recommended to wait for at least two weeks after the IUI procedure before conducting a pregnancy test to detect the presence of the hormone HCG. For confirmation of pregnancy, an ultrasound scan to observe the fetal heart should be performed approximately 4 weeks after the procedure. This timeline allows for the appropriate duration for implantation and subsequent development to be accurately assessed.
